Milestone Control Points in Advanced Editor

When I am modeling a change over time to an expense, it would be nice to use Milestones as control points in addition to hard coding the years from the start of the expense.

I came here to post this suggestion so was glad to see it’s already here. This came up in the Discord during a discussion of vacation spending in retirement during Gogo/SlowGo/NoGo years. Currently you can either do this with a single expense that uses control points to ratchet down the spending at the end of GoGo and SlowGo years, or you can create three separate expenses and use milestones for each of the transitions. It would be great to have a single expense and use milestones to trigger the control point changes. This would also solve the separate issue of control points being based on the year index rather than actual age (meaning you need to adjust the control points each year if you want them to occur at a fixed age).

To add to Fred E’s comment, this feature would be nice to have in order to tie medical expenses to gogo/slowgo/nogo milestones too. Fortunately, there’s a good workaround for now.

Another option (maybe easier to implement) would be to have year 0 anchored to a particular age or milestone. Then the control points could still be relative like they are now (but relative to the milestone/age rather than always being relative to “Now”.

Ignore my comment above – you can anchor year 0 to an age/milestone already, it’s just the control points that can’t be set this way. Mentioning this here (instead of deleting my previous comment), in case anyone else had the issue of their graph always showing 5 years til first milestone even after a year (or more elapses). If that happens, it’s because you have the expense starting at “Now”, and instead you want to set it to your age.

This would be huge. Right now I have three living expenses items: pre-retirement, post-retirement and after one of me or my wife dies. These three expenses could be consolidated into one if we were allowed to use milestones in control points.

I’ve been using the advanced editor to fine-tune our plan a lot since 4.3 came out in EA, and this feature would clean up so much. Very good suggestion.
