Under consideration

:speech_balloon:

Attach a factor to a favourite food/drink!

So if I were to add “coffee” to my food/drink log, I could automatically have it add “caffeine” to the factors tab. Maybe have it be a separate colour in the Favourites list or something?

    That’s an interesting idea.

But would this take too long to set up for people. For example, would people be setting up a factor every time they entered a new food item in order to link each one?

I was picturing something like a small icon at the end of each line in the favorites, that when pressed allows you to edit factors to associate with that favourite. Then in the future whenever you select that favourite to add the food items it also adds those factors. It wouldn’t require any extra effort if not needed, or you can even have the app hide the icon until specifically enabled by the user in options, if you don’t want to confuse new people :)

I suppose if you think it would be tedious to, say, add a “dairy” factor to all their favourites that contain dairy, a batch edit would speed it up but I’m not sure if people have favourite lists that long. I’m still pretty new myself :) let me know if my idea isn’t clear in any way!

This would be very helpful, I think, particularly if it were “opt in” rather than mandatory. Most things I eat or drink don’t have factors that would need to be tagged, and it would be ultimately much faster to track if I had the option to tag certain favorites.

Yes, I totally agree that it should be optional. If James/Bearable team decide it looks a bit cluttered or confusing, it can even be an option that’s disabled by default, but available for people who want to save a bit of time tagging :)

Maybe just let us add more types of drinks to be tracked the same way as water? Or let us change what to track with that function. I know many people are having problem drinking enough water but many people also have the opposite problem of drinking too much; Wine, coffee, soda etc. This would also be interesting to track by quantity rather than as a factor.

Instead of creating all the food items we eat, I think it would be really helpful to have a database of foods/ingredients that map relationships to factors. For example: wheat would be tied to gluten cabbage is high FODMAP and high fiber Brie cheese is dairy and can contain gluten and high histamine bananas are high in potassium and can be highly in histamines sweet potatoes are high in sucrase Yogurt is dairy and high in histamines

If people track ingredients they eat this could identify factors that they might not have considered. I love data projects and would be willing to volunteer my time to work on this data table. Or you could pull from an existing data source. For example, there is an iOS app called intolerances (it has a strawberry as the app icon) that allows you to filter by intolerances (or factors) and specify sensitivity level (weak, moderate, strong) and it will show foods that are safe or not safe.

This would be more powerful combined with tracking amount of food as sensitivities and intolerances are often tied to amount of intake (someone may tolerate a few tablespoons of something but a cup of it would cause symptoms). So you could calculate total intake of a factor in a period of time and this could identify possible dietary changes that could help

Yes! That would be like an advanced version of what I was picturing. I tried to make my idea as simple/basic as I could, in order to have a higher chance of getting implemented, but if James/Bearable accepts your help it could be amazing :)

In my opinion, while that might be more additional setup, it would pay off with me not having to manually add a factor every single time I eat certain things. Only having to do it once vs hundreds of times. ;3

Maybe an Edit option for our favorite (and perhaps recent) list, kind of like how we can edit various other things on this app, would help. In there, we can rename the food if we want, along with the Edit option to re-order the list (either manually, or maybe we can also choose from one or two sorting options like alphabetical order, most-to-least used, latest-to-longer-ago used, or something).

But the only difference could be that if we click the item as if we were going to rename it, it can also have a field underneath to attach a factor if we want to, otherwise it defaults as blank. From there, we can choose from Factors that we’ve created in the Factors section. Simple! :D

(And for additional convenience, perhaps one can also Add a Factor from that menu as a secondary means of access, in case we don’t have a factor we want already on the list. A bit of redundancy for the sake of convenience, though this can be ignored as a request as seen fit.)

To me this would be great, cuz I’m on a low-FODMMAP diet, and am attempting to reintroduce specific ingredients slowly to see how my body reacts to them. So the Factors are majorly important to note which particular FODMAP I’m experimenting with, so I can then look at the graphs and see if I’m much worse off when I eat them or not.

But having to manually click my Factors every time is a pain, it caused me to narrow my choices down to only a few, so I wouldn’t feel stonewalled from having to scroll through such a long list and click around every single meal.

Also! That menu could also of course have the + Add button to add additional foods, more like all the other factors. You wouldn’t have to get rid of the type-a-food-in method, since that has its merits for quick addition. But trying to fill out my Favorite list ahead of time was really arduous, because I’d have to type in a food, submit it, then click Add To Favorites, then delete it, then repeat over and over.

By also having a submenu for Add/Rename (and Add Factors???)/Edit like so many other items on this app, if we’re doing a mass-addition session for foods/factors, that would let us far more easily fill in our list, if we’re the types to plan ahead. :3

I’d consider that win-win, if it can be done.

Agreed! I’d like to track my soda I take because I’m trying to cut back and quit.
