Visual mood / emotion entry option

Create the ability to select emotions / moods from a psychology tool in form of a colour wheel or other visual design/framework, such as Plutchik’s wheel of emotions or the Geneva emotion wheel. For alexithymic and/or more visually oriented people, being able to choose an emotion from an established list is far easier than coming up with the words for it on one’s own. It also helps to narrow down more complex emotions from basic or vague ones like good/bad/angry - eg. “sad” refines to “lonely”, “neglected”, “abandoned” etc These tools can help develop skills in recognising emotions, how they relate to each other, and mindfulness of feelings, resulting in improved emotional regulation over time.

Hi Phoebe, thank you for this suggestion. I think a visual entry option would be very helpful to many people. Do you think this wheel would look okay on a small (phone) screen?

Thanks Eoghan, that’s true, a wheel might be difficult to see on a small screen as they can be rather detailed.

Perhaps a modified version that is more like a set of pathways, with the first set of each pathway being the broadest category of emotions (fear, sadness, happiness, etc) and navigate through that to fine-tune more complex/compound emotions?

It is certainly helpful to have a range of basic options at a glance though, arranged by colour/shades. That really assists in identifying the actual word for the felt experience, and expands emotional vocabulary, which is necessary for the development of emotional awareness and regulation.

The Plutchik wheel is a simpler design, but the Geneva and Junto wheels have more information in them.

A visually clear ‘starting point’ which could then be navigated somehow might be a way to approach the design?

I quite like the one here: https://thechalkboardmag.com/the-feelings-circle-chart-emotional-communication The innermost circle should fit in the mood area, and clicking/tapping on it could bring up an enlarged version or a circle with the outer two rings related to the chosen emotion. (I don’t use the mood section at all at the moment, because it’s not good for me to think of unpleasant emotions as failures.)
