Better handling of medications with multiple active ingredients

The current meds/supplement tracking only lets you enter a single quantity for a medication. It is unclear what to put here for medications which have multiple active ingredients (1 tablet/capsule is formula specific and might have different meanings if you change strengths or brands with different formulas).

Different medications can share active ingredients. I might take aspirin directly for a month, but then switch to taking Excedrin (acetaminophen, aspirin, caffeine) the following month. Unless you track individual active ingredients as their own meds, bearable will treat these as entirely distinct meds and act as if you stopped taking aspirin.

I agree with this! Also, I take a lot of supplements and need to provide the list of ingredients to my doctor at each appointment. She likes to see the ingredients in the multivitamins as well as the specific vitamins. I would like to be able to create a vitamin like a recipe.

At a minimum, the medications section should have the ability to list notes for multiple ingredients. This would be similar to Apple Health functionality (which I don’t love but at least I can list the ingredients in a note).

I would love to see a support for multi-ingredient meds. I’d like to be able to view insights on and see correlations for a particular ingredient that is contained in a supplement/med.

    For example, let’s say I’m taking Möller’s cod liver oil, which contains in standard dose of 5ml: - Vitamin D 10 µg (400 IU) - Vitamin A 250 µg - Vitamin E 3 mg - Omega-3 fatty acids 1110 mg - total DHA 500 mg - total EPA 360 mg

Additionally I’m taking 1 Brand X vitamin D capsule (which contains 2000 IU) and a ‘Centrum’ multivitamin pill which contains different vitamins and minerals, including 200 IU vitamin D, 800 µg vit A, 15 mg vit E.

When analyzing correlations, or looking on a graph, I’d like to be able to view total daily dosage of any ingredient. So if I took 1 dose of fish oil, 1 vitamin D capsule and 1 multi-vitamin pill in a day, and logged it normally, in insights graph mode I would like to be able to select from the meds list: - Vitamin D and see 2600 IU on that day - Vitamin A and see 1050 µg - Vitamin E and see 18 mg - Omega-3 fatty acids and see 1110 mg - DHA and see 500 mg - EPA and see 360 mg

The necessary UI change when managing meds/supplies.

When creating/editing an ‘unused’ med/supp, there’s an option to set ‘IsComplex’ flag (or change med type to ‘Complex’). When creating ‘Complex’ meds, the user needs to select one or more ingredients from the list, and specify the amount for each. The unit would be taken from the chosen ingredient. Also, I think there’s need to add some validations/restrictions on editing a complex med after it was defined and any data logged. - changing the ‘IsComplex’ flag after a med was created and used, should not be possible. - modifying the amount/strength of a complex med should result in recalculating the ingredient’s content. It would affect only future entries. - modifying the ingredient’s content should affect only future entries as well

How to manage ingredients, is a separate question. I think there could be two approaches 1. Create a new dedicated ‘Ingredients’ list (managed separately from standard meds/supplements) 2. Extend standard med/supplement with type (standard/complex/ingredient)

Approach 1 details: In settings–>Add/Edit pages, there’s additional entry called ‘Meds/Supplements ingredients’. An ingredient contains a name and a unit (Vitamin D, IU). This list can be also accessed and modified when creating a med with IsComplex flag enabled. When managing Meds/Supplements, there’s a IsComplex flag. If enabled, user would need to select one or more ingredients from the list, and specify the amount for each.

Approach 2 details: Each med/supp has a new enumeration (medType: standard/complex/ingredient) - Standard: works as currently - Complex: has strength/amount and optional reminder as the standard one, but the user needs to select one or more ingredients from the list, and specify the ingredient amount. The unit would be taken from the chosen ingredient. - Ingredient - such supp/meds would not show when adding entries in Home tab. For an ingredient, user would set only enter name and an unit (no strength/amount, no reminders).

For example, if I want to track precisely the compounds from my example below, I’d add the ingredients: - Vitamin D, unit: IU - Vitamin A, unit: µg - Vitamin E, unit: mg - … (same for other multivitamin ingredients) - Omega 3 fatty acids, unit: mg - DHA (is ingredient: true, is complex: false), unit: mg - EPA (is ingredient: true, is complex: false), unit: mg Then I would add a new ‘Complex’ med/supplement: Möller’s Cod Liver Oil Lemon, with the standard dose of 5 ml and ingredients in this dose: - Vitamin D, 400 IU - Vitamin A 250 µg - Vitamin E 3 mg - Omega-3 fatty acids 1110 mg - total DHA 500 mg - total EPA 360 mg And the same for ‘Centrum’ multi-vitamin, ‘Brand X’ vitamin D etc.

I really would like to see this implemented. It would really help identifying what’s affecting our health, especially for people with sensitivity to various compounds.
