Backup now!

My last backup has been successful 5 days ago, when I checked right now. I miss a button “backup now” to manually start an iCloud-backup.

The backups are managed automatically by iOS, and can’t be manually controlled with regards to their start and end times.

Arc has to be extremely careful about energy use, both in the foreground and background, to avoid upsetting iOS and getting terminated and/or blacklisted for excessive energy consumption.

That means that Arc has to delegate the control of all background tasks to iOS, so that iOS itself can decide when is an appropriate and acceptable time to run any task (such as backups), and also to decide when to stop that task.

It’s possible to have a “Backup now” button in your iPhone’s settings because Apple are allowed to break their own rules, and do whatever they want. Third party apps however don’t have that luxury, and pushing ahead and doing something like backups when iOS has decided the time isn’t right would result in Bad Things™.

To get the backups to start, make sure your phone is plugged in to power, connected to reliable wifi, and the phone is “idle” (ie is locked and not being used for anything at that time).

    Hope that helps to explain!

Ah. Now I understand. Thx for the detailed explanation. :)

A user initiated action wouldn’t be considered a background task. The user would by necessity have the app open in order to click the button. This would be a good workaround for when iOS doesn’t want to perform a backup in the background. Mine has gone 29 days at this point with no backup.

+1 for what Brian said, why would a user-initiated task in a foreground app be subject to iOS background CPU usage restrictions?
