Show amount remaining in the bracket when showing the tooltip on hover

In the Effective Brackets screen, you can hover different parts of the income bar to determine the bracket at the mouse position. For example: 27.52% Bracket ($31.24K) followed by $75,000 - $120,797, followed by the individual taxes. The $31.24K is the amount USED in the bracket, but there is no display of what is REMAINING in that bracket.

Perhaps change “($31.24K)” to “($31.24K, $14.56K remaining)”

This would be useful in figuring out Roth conversions that fill up the bracket without having to do the math yourself.

Of course, this will apply to the topmost bracket, since the brackets below have, by definition, filled up.

It’s a good idea in general. But it is quirky to deal with when it comes to joint plans, or years where you have multiple different types of income that are taxed as ordinary income. So it could be misleading to add this. I think it would lead down the wrong path, unfortunately.

    • You have to know to observe the right-most ordinary income bracket that applies correctly.

    • There’s also tricky interactions across brackets due ot NIIT and additional medicare that are difficult

So I suspect we would need a different approach to meet your underlying need.

I think 4.6.0 will address the underlying need.
