Indicate Cumulative Total Costs for Roth conversions

When comparing various Roth conversions, a Cumulative Total Cost Metric would be helpful. Most Roth conversions achieve much of their benefit at the End of Plan Life. I would be helpful when comparing various Roth scenarios to know Cumulative Total Cost at each year of plan. Cumulative Total Cost would include taxes and any penalties (IRMMA) from Year 1 of plan to each succeeding plan year. When comparing various Roth conversions, it’s helpful to compare Change in Net Worth to Change in Cumulative Total Cost for say 5 yrs, 10 yrs, 15 yrs, 20 yrs, 25 yrs, 30 yrs. Some would feel more comfortable with Roth conversions that indicate positive Net Worth and Lowest Cumulative Taxes at 10 or 15 yrs rather than 25 or 30 yrs. Currently, one must manually sum the taxes for each year from Plan start year to Plan year under consideration, but penalties are not captured. If evaluating multiple Roth strategies, summing successive years becomes tedious. For example, finding the cumulative tax and penalties from 2025 start of plan to 2040 mid-point of plan involves summing taxes for each year plus finding IRMMA penalties elsewhere in the program.

This is essentially what the Compare mode can show you dynamically today. So I don’t know that we would implement a mini-version of that just for Roth conversions. To do this today, compare a No conversion plan with a conversion-enabled plan and you can not only see the cost (the dip in Net Worth), but also exactly why and how everything about your plan interacts with this. To implement your idea, it would require running the full simulation twice under normal use.
