More precise monthly averages

I’d like to suggest more precise averages in the monthly view in Exist. Specifically, I’m interested in more precise mood averages, but I someone else may be interested in greater precision for other values.

For mood, I generally rate my day a 3 unless there’s a specific reason it was better or worse than “normal”. As a result, most days are a 3 with some 2’s and 4’s here and there. When I look at monthly averages, my mood is always a “3” as a result. I think it would be more helpful as an overall assessment of mood for the month if it were more precise so I could see if my average was a 3.2 instead of, say, a 2.9.

The current average displays make sense in that I can’t choose 2.9 as a rating for any given day. I think it’s averaging to an value I could choose on any given day, but for a bigger-picture view of things, I’d essentially like to see “distance from 3” in the average. As of now, looking at the monthly view it will show me up to 20 months at a time, but if every month is a 3, I don’t have a sense of how my mood shifts at all.

The current average displays also make sense for other values, like emails sent/received in that you can’t really send half an email, so I’m not sure I personally see the value in greater precision for other values, but someone may have a use case for it. I mention this because I’m unsure if the higher precision should apply to every value or just mood. I hope there’s some discussion here about it!

I have been thinking about changing this for mood as well. I don’t think it makes sense for any other integer value to provide a decimal average, though.

The Mood trends page now shows decimals in the graph, which resolves this partly.

Unless I’m missing something, it appears the ‘Average over time’ chart for my mood is snapped to integer values. The ‘then’ and ‘now’ values display a single decimal point, but this also appears to be snapped to the integer: then = 8.0, now = 6.0.

One of my main motivations for tracking with Exist is to identify trends over time, for my mood and all other values which I measure in integers. For this reason I would much prefer for all values averages and charts to be displayed with at least 1 decimal place.

Related to https://changemap.co/hellocode/exist/task/2804-show-mood-average-as-decimal, but just wanted to voice my support here as well. Showing these averages as a decimal would make trend tracking much more meaningful.

Thanks for all the great work on this application
